Objective:
Visit an archeological dig site.
Details:
1) Identify an archeological dig site that you’d like to go to.
What do we mean by “archeological dig site”? For the purposes of this objective, a dig site, also known as an “excavation site”, is a location at which trained archeologists have extracted artifacts that were previously buried. (Wikipedia has a more detailed description, if you’re interested.)
Note: Your site can be either active (currently being researched) or historical. If you choose a historical site, the location should ideally include information and/or artifacts from the dig that you can view.
If you’re wondering where to start, consider:
Archeological Institute of America’s Map of Fieldwork Opportunities
(Make sure to call ahead, as not all of these sites will be open to the public.)
2) Explore your chosen archeological dig site.
3) Take a photo of your archeological adventure and share it in our Facebook group.
4) Alongside your photo, let us know:
What site did you visit?
What artifacts were excavated at this site?
How do these artifacts contribute to our understanding of the area?
